Overnight oats are simple to make, versatile, convenient and healthy. I almost forgot, they can be absolutely delicious. I cannot tell you how much I love overnight oats but it was NOT love at first bite!! I’ve seen overnight oats everywhere and the picture always looks great but never really turns out that way. I’ve tried three recipes before this one and did not like any of them.
Two things are important in overnight oats: texture and flavor.
Overnight oats are meant to be eaten cold for convenience, so I prefer something creamy, not lumpy or chewy. For just the right texture you have to have the ratio of oats, milk and yogurt right. I think this recipe is perfection.
The maple syrup in the recipe ensures sweetness but you can easily cut it out if it suits your taste. I can do without it, personally. I always just make the basic overnight oats and then mix in 2 Tbsp of the flavor I want to add.
fresh or frozen fruit and 1 tsp cinnamon
chocolate chips or 1 tsp cocoa powder
pumpkin and 1 tsp pumpkin pie spice
BASIC OVERNIGHT OATS
1/2 cup old fashioned rolled oats
1/3 cup plain greek yogurt
1/2 cup milk (dairy or dairy-free alternative)
1 tsp pure vanilla extract
1 Tbsp maple syrup
pinch of sea salt
Combine all ingredients in a bowl and stir.
(Optional) Mix in extras for more flavor!
Carefully pour into a jar, seal with lid and refrigerate. Oats will be ready to eat in 6-8 hours.
There is nothing better than having a delicious, healthy breakfast or snack ready to grab out of the fridge when you’re busy!
