Book: The Storyteller

I have a solid book recommendation for any music lover but especially any lover of Nirvana or the Foo Fighters.  The Storyteller by Dave Grohl was a surprisingly rich read. The author used heady words and held my attention like a master.  I was not a Dave Grohl fan, per se, but as a nineties chick, of course I’m a Nirvana fan. A little confession, I thought he was a guitarist. It would not have mattered but he is actually a drummer and I am a huge fan now. Having read dozens of biographies, musicians in particular, I thought it was a must-read. It turned out to be much more than a book about a musician.

I bought this book for myself for Christmas, wrapped it myself and it sat under the tree until I finally opened it Christmas morning.  I read The Storyteller just as I was trying to fit into a new career because my efforts at writing had been less than fruitful. Every day I was asking myself, ”What am I doing working here?”.  This book is everything I needed and such a pleasant surprise.

Dave Grohl’s book The Storyteller was so inspirational.

Dave did not disappoint. I call him Dave now because I feel like we’re friends. It was such an easy read but impressively written. His creativity with words really shown through and I immediately respected him for that. He wrote the book like he’s talking to some friends, just some intelligent conversation with many secrets and emotional revelations along the way. It reads like he is just a guy telling his life, his extraordinary, extremely successful life and it really inspired me to live a life that I enjoy. It gave me inspiration that you really can make money doing what you love.

Dave chronicles his early days as a music lover, turning punk and eventually playing at the infamous CBGB with the band Scream. Next, he joined Nirvana and they blew the planet away. Nirvana’s superstardom was cut short after lead singer Kurt Cobain was found dead. Born from the ashes, was Dave Grohl’s Foo Fighters. These major events are skillfully woven with Dave’s life lessons, how he grew his love of music and a look into his family life.

I’m not going to give away all the delightful surprises I found in this book but around every corner of these pages are easter eggs of musical royalty.  The shit that happened to this guy is nuts, like miracles from the universe and he explains how he manifested it all when he was young.

The Foo Fighters first album is Dave Grohl on every instrument. That is epic talent, determination and he deserves to be among the royalty. The Foo Fighters have become a multimember band but when it started it was all Dave. This article is being edited just days after the tragic death of the Foo Fighters drummer, Taylor Hawkins. Taylor was the drummer for Foo Fighters for the last twenty-five years and adds another chapter to Dave Grohl’s memoirs. Nirvana and the Foo Fighters have won multiple Grammy awards as well as a bazillion other awards. Dave is a genius at his craft and his mindset.

This book gave me a kick in the ass to remember you only live once and you should spend life doing what you love.  It also gave me validation and inspired me to have courage to keep pushing for my own dreams, stand up for what is important to me and let my freak flag fly, as Dave would say.

I highly recommend grabbing this memoir, click the book below to purchase. Leave a comment! Have you heard of Dave Grohl?
