The Benefits of Collagen

You may have heard that collagen is beneficial for your skin and hair but that is not all. Do you have osteoarthritis or joint pain? Would you like healthier skin and hair? Would you like to have strong bones and muscles? If you said YES to any of those questions, you probably should be taking a collagen supplement.

Collagen is the most abundant protein in our body and is essential in the framework of our skin, bones, blood vessels and other connective tissue. Collagen proteins are made naturally by the body using amino acids found in food but you can also take supplements to ensure you have enough collagen and improve your overall health.

The amino acids required to build a collagen peptide are: Glycine, proline and hydroxyproline. Here are some foods that can help build collagen peptides.

Proline: egg whites, dairy, cabbage, mushrooms, asparagus

Glycine: pork and chicken skin, gelatin

Vitamin C: citrus fruits, bell peppers

Zinc: beef, shellfish, chickpeas, lentils, beans, milk and cheese

Collagen production lessens drastically due to smoking, excess alcohol, lack of sleep, excessive sun exposure and lack of exercise. As we age, the body doesn’t create as much collagen and a collagen supplement is imperative to maintain a healthy body. Research has shown that a collagen supplement improved joint mobility and decreased pain. Studies have also shown that taking a collagen supplement improves skin elasticity and adds strength and resilience to hair, skin and nails. Collagen supplements may be taken once per day and you may start seeing or feeling results in 4-6 months.

There are dozens of collagen supplements on the market but Monat makes my favorite! I am not vegan but this supplement just happens to be. Monat has made a revolutionary vegan collagen supplement called Collagen Key. Collagen Key is a special blend of amino acids the body needs to build collagen peptides. It’s sugar-free and a delicious peach-berry flavor that includes potent antioxidants and adaptogens.

As the body ages, it is important to provide adequate collagen to optimize our body’s skin, bones and muscles. Whether or not you decide to take a supplement, it is important to eat a well balanced diet full of vitamins and protein. Take care of your body by drinking enough water and exercising regularly.
